How Is It Calculated?

The Formula

φ = (1 + √5) / 2 ≈ 1.6180339887...

This elegant formula produces a number with unique properties. In a golden rectangle, if you remove a square from it, the remaining rectangle has the same proportion as the original.

Why is it called "golden"?

Can I use φ for web design?

Yes. Calculate layout widths using φ. If your sidebar is 200px, a φ-proportioned main area would be ~323px. This creates harmony but isn't a requirement—functionality always comes first.

Is the golden ratio in human faces real?

This is contested. While some facial proportions approximate φ, rigorous studies show significant variation. It's a popular myth rather than scientific law, though aesthetically pleasing faces often happen to have near-golden proportions.
